Among the ceramics depicting animals, in the Sicilian tradition, the owl certainly has a place of honor. It is believed that the custom of making jars in the shape of an owl comes from a legacy of the Magna Graecia period, the animal was in fact considered sacred to the goddess of wisdom Athena (hence the Latin name of the bird Athene Noctua).

The owl, with its sharp gaze penetrates the darkness, personifying the light as it comes out of the darkness indicating the revelation, represents the one who sees in the dark, it is therefore also considered a protective spirit to be called upon in case of difficulty and in case there are cruel people who besiege our happy life.

The owl is the bird of wisdom, as it is able to see and hear things that escape other animals. It can help to recognize the truth and interpret the indications of destiny.

F rom a functional point of view, the ceramic owl is nothing more than a vase (made up of the animal's body) with a lid (the animal's head). The object was used to contain water and placed at the bedside, it was then useful at night to quench one's thirst, the head acting as a useful glass. A further use of the object seems to have been that of a container for honey.
