Among ceramics depicting animals, the owl certainly holds a special place in Sicilian tradition. It is believed that the custom of creating owl-shaped jars stems from a legacy of the Magna Graecia period, when the animal was considered sacred to the goddess of wisdom, Athena (hence the bird's Latin name, Athene Noctua).
The owl, with its sharp gaze, penetrates the darkness, personifying the light emerging from the darkness and indicating revelation. It represents one who sees in the dark. It is therefore also considered a protective spirit to be called upon in times of difficulty and in case cruel people besiege our happy life.
The owl is the bird of wisdom, as it is able to see and hear things that other animals cannot. It can help recognize the truth and interpret the signs of destiny.
From a functional point of view, the ceramic owl is nothing more than a vase (made of the animal's body) with a lid (the animal's head). The object was used to hold water and placed at the bedside, later being useful at night for quenching thirst, with the head acting as a handy drinking cup. Another use for the object appears to have been as a container for honey.
